About Us

The Creation

Borders School of Music was born as the UK entered the first lock down in 2020. The driving force behind the school is Matt Bramhall, a touring session musician who was faced with the entire shutdown of the Live Music industry in which he worked. Creating a music school had always been a vision for Matt when he returned to the Borders after nearly 10 years in London. With the cancellation of all touring work due to the pandemic, it was the perfect opportunity to get a school up and running. The school is now in its 4th year and has over 300 students learning drums, bass, guitar, piano, vocals, brass instruments and violin. We have also launched lessons in production covering studio recording, DJ skills, live sound engineering and learning how to use industry standard music software packages.

The School

We are based at the old dentists on 6 Roxburgh Street in Galashiels. The premises was used as a dental surgery previously and the surgery rooms have converted over perfectly into teaching studios. If you are interested in what we are doing, then come by during our working hours. We would be happy to give you a tour.

Drum Cave

This is where our 1:1 drum lessons take place. We have a variety of drum kits of different sizes to suit different ages including a super small kit for preschool and P1 – P3. Our drum tutor teaches from the tutor kit and our students have their own kit for the duration of the lesson.

The Red Studio

Our guitar room is situated on the first floor and is equipped with electric guitars, acoustic guitars and ukuleles. We have a variety of sizes; 3/4 length electric and acoustic instruments for the little ones and full size guitars for adult learners. We even have 3/4 length left handed guitars so we are fully covered and can cater for all learners. 1:1 guitar lessons take place in the red studio and the room is big enough for small group lessons on Ukulele.

The Purple Studio

The purple studio is equipped with an 88 weighted Yamaha electric piano which was kindly donated to the school by an individual wishing to give their piano a good home. The piano is being put to good use with our 1:1 piano lessons being taught from the piano. Our purple studio is big enough for group lessons with our schools groups being taught from the space.

The Blue Studio

Previously the reception for the dental surgery, our blue studio is a multi functional space with 1:1 piano lessons taking place as well as acting as a studio control room for recording sessions. There is a small room adjacent which we use as a vocal booth when recording and the blue studio is patched into to our drum cave giving us the ability to record a full drum kit. Production lessons take place in this space utilising the studio gear installed in the room. A new addition to the room is a beautiful upright piano which was kindly donated to us by a local family wanting to give the instrument a good home.
